Senior Woman in Memory Care

MEMORY CARE

Memory care is a type of specialized care for individuals with memory impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. Memory care facilities typically provide a secure environment with staff trained in dementia care and specialized programming and activities tailored to the needs of those with memory impairments.

Each Memory Care Community Generally has the Following:

  • 24-hour access to personal care staff

  • RN/LPN in building 40-80 hours per week and on call

  • An emergency communication system (pull cord and pendants)

  • 3 meals a day and snacks

  • Weekly housekeeping

  • Weekly personal laundry and linens

  • Private room and typically a half bath

  • Fully accessible bathroom and grab bars, easy-to-use shower

  • Basic cable, internet, and all utilities (except personal phone)

  • Each community has some amenities and activities specific to that location

  • Will accommodate Home Health (PT, OT, speech therapy) in the community and follow the therapy advice given to help strengthen the resident.

  • Incontinence supplies are usually provided by the family and are not included in the overall cost.

  • Each community usually partners with a specific pharmacy that can refill and deliver medications. Your normal co-pays will apply.

  • Works in close cooperation with whatever hospice agency you choose

Each room has base rent, and then additional care costs will be added based on what you need. Additional care costs include such things as help to shower, bed mobility, and medication management. The care costs are determined after an assessment after you have toured and decided which location you prefer. Once you move in, there should be another assessment after 30 days to ensure your needs are met. Most memory care units have a monthly base rate of $6,000 (average), with individual care costs on top of that. Oregon has over 270 Memory Care facilities, and care costs vary. They are determined after an assessment by the care home provider. But on average, the total monthly cost could be anywhere from $6,500 - $9,500. Residents' families typically furnish the rooms or studios. Lastly, most communities require a one-time Community Fee of $2,500-$10,000.
